Over the years the Catholic church has persecuted thousands of innocent people who were accused of witchcraft or heresy. Galileo was one of them. Fortunately for science, he avoided being burned at the stake. Not so
with thousand of others.

It worked something like this. If you were an old woman or a social outcast all you had to do was heal people or grow a few herbs in your garden. That was enough to get you accused of witchcraft. Sometimes whole towns were wiped out as one neighbor accused another. And guess where all of the property and money went? To the church, of course. That is how the church has so much property and wealth today.
But to say it in a non-Catholic way: Bad Karma will get you every time. It seems that they are paying for it now. The widespread practice of pedophilia and child abuse in the Catholic church today has brought all of the priests under suspicion, even those who are innocent. Just like the innocent people way back when who were accused of witchcraft. Child abuse has become a witch hunt.
According to the St. Louis Post Dispatch, "Former St. Louis University President Daniel O'Connell is at the center of an unusual lawsuit involving allegations of sexual abuse by church clergy."
"The breach of contract lawsuit, filed late Wednesday in St. Louis Circuit Court, accuses the Jesuits of the Missouri Province of violating terms of a 2003 settlement, which followed allegations that O'Connell abused a college student. The terms called for the organization to keep the priest out of teaching or ministry positions that would allow one-on-one contact with women. O'Connell was SLU's president from 1974 to 1978."
The allegations for people in power in the church go all the way up to the pope. When he was a Cardinal he may have covered up the abuses of priests underneath him. He just now has come out and made a public statement condemning it.
Over the years the Catholic church has quietly settled with the parents of the abused children by paying them off to keep them quiet. Then the abusing priest is not asked to resign, but rather transferred to another school where he can begin his travesties all over again.
