To the Vatican, Belgian law enforcement authorities last week treated the Catholic Church like the Mafia.

Authorities detained bishops attending a conference and even searched the graves of two priests as part of an investigation into sexual abuse by priests. Reportedly, the graves might have contained file related to the investigation.

Europe has become increasingly critical of the church as revelations of abuse have come out. But the Vatican called the searching of the graves a “violation” and complained officially to the Belgian government.
