The Unsung Heroes in the Fight Against Sex Abuse

Hero'sflag_usa Tag: usa

his past week I had the privilege to attend the 16th Annual Symposium on Child Abuse and Neglect that was put on by the Children’s Advocacy Centers of North Carolina . Also in attendance were hundreds of people from various fields that are involved in the ongoing efforts to improve the lives of abused children.

These included social workers, child care advocates, law enforcement, mental health professionals and prosecutors.as well as the administrators of the Children’s Advocacy Centers that are located across North Carolina.

Story Continues below

There was an inspirational presentation by Olga R. Trujillo an attorney with the U.S. Justice Department who told her courageous tale of overcoming horrible abuse during her childhood. Everyone also benefited from workshops dealing with various aspects of child abuse conducted by some of the best speakers I’ve ever heard on the subject. These were people involved in the front lines of dealing with abused children on a daily basis. They do it solely because they believe in the work that they are doing and not for any monetary rewards. They are truly unsung heroes that deserve your support.

The Children’s Advocacy Centers of North Carolina is the umbrella organization for the accredited children’s advocacy centers across the state. Their website http://cacnc.org/home provides much useful information including the location of all of the accredited children’s advocacy centers. The following list comes from their website:

These Centers receive relatively small amounts of money from the State of North Carolina but are dependent on donations from the private sector for their existence. I can think of no better place to donate money than to a Child’s Advocacy Center. Charlotte is lucky to have Pat’s Place , s it is staffed with wonderfully talented and dedicated professionals. They have worked hard to ensure that sexual abuse victims have a safe place to be seen and helped by health care professionals , child advocates as well as law enforcement. I am certain that the other centers around the state have done so as well. Because of the dedicated, selfless efforts of these unsung heroes, I strongly encourage you to support your local Child Advocacy Center.

I have also gotten to meet the incredibly dedicated and talented staff at Butterfly House in Albemarle, who work hard every day to protect children. They deserve all of the support that you can provide.
