WHAT: At a sidewalk news conference, a new child sex abuse and cover-up lawsuit will be disclosed and discussed. It names an Archdiocese of Miami schoolteacher who now faces criminal charges for molesting kids during special music lessons as recently as August, 2010.
WHEN: TODAY, Wednesday, October 27 at 1:00pm
WHERE: Public sidewalk in front of St. Andrew’s Church and School, 9950 NW 29th St., Coral Springs
(near the corner of NW 29th St. and NW 99th Ave.)
WHO: One of the Plaintiffs’ attorneys, JEFFREY HERMAN, who has represented hundreds of survivors of child sexual abuse, will announce the filing of the lawsuit. A written statement from the child’s mother will be made available at the event.
DETAILS: According to a new lawsuit filed today, a SAINT ANDREW’S CATHOLIC SCHOOL teacher molested his former preschool student during music lessons with the boy at his family home from approximately 2009-August 2010.
The teacher, MIGUEL CALA, reportedly worked as an art and music teacher in the school for more than 10 years. He first gained access to John Doe No. 68 when CALA was little John’s preschool teacher. During that time, CALA also worked at St. Andrew’s parish as a music minister, frequently playing or directing music for church services with the assistance of his students, including John Doe No. 68. The lawsuit alleges that CALA used his positions in the parish and school to identify potential victims and gain their families’ trust before sexually abusing his victims. CALA fondled John Doe No. 68 during weekly music lessons.
In early September, 2010, CALA was arrested on charges that he abused another student during music lessons.
John Doe No. 68 v. Saint Andrews Catholic Church of Coral Springs, FL, et. al, (case no. 10-57733-CA-10) was filed in Miami-Dade Circuit Court. Cala’s criminal prosecution is now pending in Broward County. Anyone with information about Cala’s alleged sexual abuse of kids is encouraged to contact law enforcement.
